This week, Jack and Katherine get straight down to business and watch one of Jack’s childhood favourites – Supercar. Will its early puppetry and special effects charm Katherine, or perhaps put her off Gerry Anderson’s first ever science fiction series?
Heroic pilot, Mike Mercury and the Supercar team prepare for blast off in 39 episodes of the Supermarionation series which launched the marvel of the age. Supercar is an incredible machine built by Professor Popkiss and Doctor Beaker from their laboratory in the Nevada desert. It can fly, it can go underwater, it can go into space, and just occasionally it even travels on land. Mike, Popkiss, and Beaker are joined by young boy, Jimmy Gibson, and his pet chimpanzee, Mitch the Monkey, for adventures which see them foil the plots of scheming villains, perform rescue operations, and explore the globe, all while testing the abilities of the Supercar. First broadcast from 1961 to 1962, Supercar attracted a global audience thanks to the backing of Lew Grade. It was the start of a relationship between Grade and the Andersons which spanned some of the most successful, and most expensive, television series ever produced. Jack and Katherine are ready to pick up the story.
Jack’s a massive Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Space: 1999 etc.) fan, and Katherine isn’t. In order to bring about peace in the household, Katherine has agreed to watch the first episode of every Gerry Anderson series in existence.
