Ep 12 – Fireball XL5

Jack and Katherine journey to Sector 25 of outer space with the Fireball XL5 crew for this week’s episode. What will Katherine make of the devious aliens from Planet 46 threatening to destroy the Earth? And how about that coffee, Venus?

First broadcast in 1962, Fireball XL5 stars Colonel Steve Zodiac of the World Space Patrol as he explores the galaxy with Doctor Venus, Professor Matthew Mattic, Robert The Robot, and Zoonie the Lazoon. The spaceship Fireball XL5 patrolled Sector 25 of outer space but would also take its crew of heroes anywhere in the universe where they may be needed to answer a distress call, investigate mysterious happenings, and defend the Earth from alien threats. Supermarionation puppets continued to advance and develop, as did the special effects produced by Derek Meddings and his team at AP Films. Fireball XL5 achieved an accolade which no other Anderson series reached, of being transmitted on a US TV Network, as well as winning great success in Britain and all over the world. But what did Jack and Katherine make of this space-age series?

Jack’s a massive Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Space: 1999 etc.) fan, and Katherine isn’t. In order to bring about peace in the household, Katherine has agreed to watch the first episode of every Gerry Anderson series in existence.

  2. In 1962 my family had just moved back to LA and we stayed in a small apartment while waiting for our home to be built. I hated the school I had to attend, and the apartment. XL5 was my escape! Once in our new home I got the XL5/ space city playset for Christmas and I was in heaven. Best toy I ever got. XL5 got me hooked on Sci-Fi, so much so that today I am the author of several Sci-Fi and Fantasy books. Thank you Mr. Anderson fo adding a large degree of mirth and whimsy to my life.
